Winston Smith works for the Ministry of truth in London, the chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. 1984 is Orwell’s dystopian novel published in the year 1949. It’s a satirical work that criticises the first world countries of that time.

The story has been told from the perspective of the protagonist who lives in Oceania, ruled by Big Brother. People are always under surveillance, have no privacy and freedom. They can only read, write and speak what they allowed to.

 Three countries mentioned in the book Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia represent provinces of America & Britain, Soviet Union (Russia) and China, respectively.

The novel contains intricate details of the dystopian totalitarian government (Ingsoc), the language they speak (Newspeak) which are the testimonies to the author’s boundless imaginations. Unquestionably, a masterpiece in English literature.

It provides a glimpse of the future world where freedom will become an ancient tale. That we are gradually heading towards the bottomless pit of captivity. When technology advances, the humankind turn obsolete simultaneously.

There are surprising twists and turns in this book which will keep you on your toes.

Indeed, a disturbing and dark read, so if you couldn’t handle it then don’t read the book. Some countries banned the book several times due to the anti-communist element, violence, etc.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone except children below 12.
