TITLE: THE GRAVEYARD BOOK
AUTHOR: NEIL GAIMAN
GENRE: FICTION, NOVEL
GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:
After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.
Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family…
MY REVIEW:
My first Neil Gaiman book and I loved it so much. I wanted to read his books from last year. Even though I picked this up in January 2019 and it was the first book mail arrived on new year day!!!(TAA-DAA).
So let’s get into the book review. It’s a story of Bod A.K.A Nobody Owens who happens to live in a graveyard together with the “souls.” When I first read the blurb, I was like “WOW! THIS GONNA BE INTERESTING.” Because we often have seen ghosts in books and films as the creatures that would scare the hell out of you. But in this novel, Gaiman has given a different outlook to them, which is the uniqueness of this story. The book contains beautiful illustrations which enhance the readability. So hats off to Chris Riddle, the illustrator.
The plot and the narration, both are just splendid. For me, reading this book was an adventurous journey as that of Bod’s life. The author has included fascinating details regarding the supernatural entities, which would keep readers’ enthusiasm throughout the reading. It’s a masterpiece. Though it’s a children fiction, every adult could enjoy the book for sure. The language used is indeed lucid yet captivating.
I fall in love with the characters. Since it has many characters, I had difficulty in recalling each name. Gaiman has maintained the mystery behind every character until the end. I had phasmophobia when I was a kid. I wish I could have read a similar book back at that time (LOL!!!).
Through this work the author tries to convey a message that is, to have compassion for others is a noble thing, so be compassionate to each other. We have been witnessing people around us becoming more selfish each day. In this era, I think every kid should read such books that would nurture them with good values of life.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
