EXCERPT:

Chapter 9

Hunter answered the call from Sergeant Charlie Middleton. He listened quietly and agreed that they did not want to lose track of the three girls from Cameron’s flat. But Hunter was not surprised that Lucky was unwilling to accommodate them. They were nothing to do with Lucky; Hunter wanted to know who they were and why they were here.
“And all three of them seemed remarkably reluctant to say anything, gov,” Charlie said.
“Do they speak English?” Hunter asked.
“A bit. They say they didn’t know the dead girl before they saw her dead, but who knows what to believe? I don’t trust the Russians at all, that’s for sure.”
“What about the other witnesses?” Hunter asked.
“We’ve finished the witness interviews, and all the other witnesses have been released with a stern reminder to make themselves available as and when necessary. Should be fine – there’s your boy, that Lord Lucky whatever, and a couple of soldier boys on leave from Afghanistan. However, gov, I’m just too long in the tooth to trust these three Russian girls to play the game properly. We’re bringing them in.”
“On what grounds?”
“They’re Russian, they don’t know our rules.”
“But you bloody do. You better have a good reason for bringing them in by the time you arrive at the station!” Hunter ended the call, then looked up to see Bear standing at his door.
“That’s the phone number all set up, Boss. Here it is.” Bear handed him a sheet of paper.
“Thanks, Bear.”
“I wouldn’t like you to think I’d been listening to your call with Charlie, Boss,” he began.
“But…”
“But he does talk very loudly on the phone.”
“He does. I think in his day they used two tin cans and a piece of string.” Hunter smiled.
“It’s just that I heard him referring to the female witnesses as Russian, but the names on the whiteboard sound more Ukrainian to me.”
“And when did you become such an expert on the nuances of Eastern European and Russian girls’ names, Bear?”
“What can I say, Boss?” The big man shrugged and smiled.
Tim stuck his head around the door. “And remember, Boss, he did his A-level History on Russia, or rather the old USSR. Mind you, he failed that.”
