Sometimes, in this hectic life, I doubt that I have forgotten to actually live. Life is what? To follow whatever everyone is doing. Born, study, work, die. Isn’t it the perfect pattern we all follow? Life is just a brief journey from birth to death. It’s like we’re born here to endure that journey until we reach the final destination. And we never know whether we’ve reached all the “milestones” of life until we die.
My take on life changed when my father passed away. Until that day, I believed life was a serious thing. The things we stress over, the money we make, all of it was going to last for us. I never really thought about that final destination until then. Now that someone so important to me has gone from this world, I doubt that everything we see around us, the notion of making money and living a luxurious life, is anything but a house of cards.
So then, what should I make out of this little life of mine? Is travelling the ultimate purpose? Is spending time with your loved ones the ultimate purpose? Is making lots of money? What actually makes one say that a person has truly lived? Isn’t it all subjective? What does a person truly want? What does one have to make out of this life? Shouldn’t we worry about finding the purpose?
I believe we should all flow with life. Life takes turns. It takes huge downfalls and uphills, and all I can do is embrace every single thing that comes to me. There is nothing we can do about what lies ahead of us. Even the largest predictive model one could ever build would fail, given the degree of uncertainty we face every single day.
Life is to live. As Alan Watts said, life’s purpose is to live. We don’t have to stress over things. Let life flow, and let it take whatever divergence it wants to take. Live light, that’s what matters.
Keeping one’s stress level at its peak doesn’t help us live a meaningful life. The cortisol spikes we go through every day don’t help us live healthier or happier. They’re already killing us.
More importantly, live lighter. Happiness is just a byproduct. Don’t stress over things you can’t control, because even if you don’t want it to, after night, day comes.
