Being a mother of a toddler and a full-time professional working in the UAE has taken away my entire day. I can’t read as much as I did years ago, especially around the time I started this blog. Life changes, priorities change, and that’s what makes life beautiful, isn’t it?
So far this year, I’ve read about 2.5 books. Exactly! I used to read ten times this number years ago, alas. So, coming to the books I’ve read: Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Dear Debbie, and Bad Blood (almost halfway through).
1. Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
You could read it as if you were watching a movie. It’s a very well-written book with detailed nuances of the mighty Hollywood, and the drama is portrayed really well. This is my first book by the author, and I loved how deeply she works on character development, along with the depth and layers of the story. You couldn’t add this book to a single genre, as it’s a mixture of a couple of them.I’m not going into the moral aspect of the book. There were characters and shades of character I wouldn’t relate to personally. But again, I wouldn’t stop recommending this book to others who would enjoy it. That’s my take on the first book.
2. Dear Debbie
The second book was Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden. I love reading her books. There is a freshness in all of her mystery novels, and I wonder about her talent for coming up with a couple of books every year, each with fresh ways to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.Dear Debbie is also one of a kind, but I won’t say it’s her best. Having read quite a few Freida McFadden books, I found this one not up to the mark. Many of the plot twists were very much expected, and I was left with many open ends even after finishing the book. That’s why I’m giving it 3 stars instead of 5.
3. Bad Blood
The one I’m halfway through is Bad Blood, the story of the fallen startup Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. I never expected the book to be this thrilling, but honestly, the actual incidents are nothing less than the biggest thriller events Silicon Valley has ever witnessed. In every chapter, the author himself keeps the thrilling part intact. I’m exactly at the halfway mark, so I’ll be reading on and, hopefully, finishing it this year (fingers crossed).
Final thoughtsSo these are the books I’ve read so far this year. I wanted to read 26 books this year but couldn’t manage it. I’m being realistic here. Hopefully, I’ll be able to add a couple more books to the list before the year ends.
